Okay we all know I take issues with “rescues” that are run by City & County Shelter employees. The 2 things need to be separated.
It is a good chance that if you live in Thurston County if your animals are seized they are going there, to that rescue, that is run by a shelter employee.
There was a raid in September & there was 4 horses seized, 1 was returned to it’s former owner, 2 are still there & the fourth “Sassy” died of colic, the vet’s report stated her intestines were twisted, & that is was a very slow & painful death, finally ending with an intestinal rupture. UNDER THE CARE OF A HOOVED ANIMAL RESCUE FOSTER HOME’S CARE. Please keep in mind this happened on January 9th 2012 & the horses were seized on September 14th 2011.
For those of you don’t know what colic in horses looks like here it is;
The horse bites at it’s stomach, they thrash on the ground, they don’t just lay down, they drop to the ground they open their mouths like they are gasping for air, they kick their legs, they attempt to roll over but they never are able to roll all the way over, their backs are arched up from the pain & they look like hunchbacks, then they get up bite & kick at their own stomachs. Their whole bodies are covered in sweat, their gums are white, their eyes bulge from their head & are bloodshot, they are nervous, unable to be comforted, they grunt because they are straining to push the gas through but it hurts them so badly they can’t even whinny.
It is a very slow & horribly painful death that can last for days. For those of you who don’t know this, a horse can not throw up but colic most times is a simple matter of care, the horse merely has to POOP, so a good caretaker will simply walk the horse & keep it moving until it does so, if it doesn’t then a vet is called out & the puts a tube down the horses nose & pumps in some medicine to fix the problem.
So how do you NOT notice this? How does a horse languish in this kind of AGONY & NO ONE notices? Her intestines RUPTURED from the pressure, can you possibly imagine that kind of pain?
I run a rescue, donations from the public are the ONLY way we can succeed, or even attempt to help animals. I can have all the “dreams” & good intentions in the world but it wouldn’t be possible without the love of others. I also understand that all it takes is one medical emergency & you are completely out of funds. (Been there did it!!!)
I also understand that when someone gives me their hard earned money I have the obligation to be honest with them & let them know exactly how I spent their monies, it is a moral obligation but it is also a legal obligation. I have been blessed with good donors, people who have donated 5 dollars to 25 hundred dollars. That is why when the nutbag Rose started her crap about me taking donations & spending them on stupid things I had to laugh because HELLO!!! I am an accountant & I keep impeccable books, & every donor knows where their money is going. It can happen that you get several emergencies & you end up in the horrid situation I did, honestly I could’ve said well “that” dog was too old & just opted to euthanize her & called it a day: but I have to live with myself, & eventually I will have to answer to a higher power. I took her out of that shelter & I made her a promise that I would do everything in my power to help her & by God I did. It is a fine line & it is a hard road.
So the constant requests for donations: I get that, what I don’t get is the County Employee/Rescue operator who is getting cash grants from a shelter to run her rescue, & also getting animals from the shelter & law enforcement when she doesn’t have the funds to care for them.
Not once do they mention that this horse is dead, or how it died, the day after she died they were again requesting donations, & they are trying to charge this Rebecca Turner woman 10K to care for her 4 horses when they don’t have 1 of them & they let one of them die, they did not need any extraordinary vet care, just support, AND they are also claiming the last group of 6 horses they took in cost 10K to take care of, when 2 of them died & they continually post about spending 2 to 4 thousand dollars on their vet care. Is 10K the “standard” price they charge every time they take an animals in every time. If they are getting 10K for every raid they take animals in from then why do they still need donations, sounds VERY lucrative to me.
They don’t even have to go out & look for horses, they are delivered right to their door, so along with what they are charging owners & what they are getting from the County Shelter, they should be pretty self sufficient. Where are those county funds coming from? County taxes? Community Donations?
I went looking for their Facebook page after getting all of this info & sure enough, no mention of the horse who died, & as I was told they said the last group of 6 horses were the “worst they had ever seen” but: In the newspaper reports they did they claimed the 4 horses from September were.
I have never dealt with this rescue, from the looks of it I will never, as a matter of fact I will not ever refer anyone to them, I don’t see them as an organization that is out for the animals, I see them grabbing at the media straws, milking it for everything it’s worth, they are misrepresenting themselves giving updates on the pig & dogs also seized when they never had them. Worst of all they have something horrid to say about almost everyone. Typical rescue high school drama.
If these rescues worked as hard as I do & many other rescues or shelters that you DON’T see in the newspapers every day to prevent this & help owners who are in trouble then there would be far less suffering for animals. I do free shots, free flea treatments, free wormers, free dog & cat food. I help people who are overwhelmed with too many critters get their numbers down, or simply help them clean up their homes & surroundings. Sadly when I get a person with too many animals I hardly ever call on any local rescuers to help because they are too busy putting others down, but I have some out of state help who will show up in caravans to help clean up & get animals placed in shelters or rescues around the west coast. I also do shelter to shelter bartering, if we have 1 shelter with 40 little dogs who need big dogs I find a shelter with big dogs who will trade that shelter bigs for littles, or vice versa. When an owner comes to me in dire straights I will foster or help them with training or just take the animals in, it does no good to put someone down when they are already there, it doesn’t make you look any better to point a finger at them.
I have left their address, paypal & website addresses up here just in case you would like to donate anyway. That is entirely up to you, maybe you know something I don’t & I don’t want animals to suffer but there are many any other horse rescues in the state who could probably use some help too.

My Comment Do you have any idea yet why that horse Sassy was found dead at one of your foster homes yet? Does the lack of food & money for vet care have anything to do with it? I was told she died of colic & that her intestines were all twisted and that it was a very slow & painful death. Why wasn’t anyone aware of her slowly painfully dying? This whole page is just begging for money & other donations, so why are you taking in animals if you can not afford to care for them & why is LAW ENFORCEMENT giving you more when it looks to me (from this page) that you can not afford the ones you already have?
Hooved Animal Rescue of Thurston County Helen – many thanks to you and all the others that have donated to the care for Rosie. This bunch has really hit us hard financially. We’ve got a grant application in and I’ll submit another this coming week and hopefully get some funds with those. We couldn’t help all the critters without the wonderful support from our community members.
Hooved Animal Rescue of Thurston County This group has been one of the worst we’ve ever had for sickness. 5 of the 6 had infections. We lost the stallion and this little one’s mama and weren’t sure if Rosie would make it or not but she’s a fighter.
Hooved Animal Rescue of Thurston County We have foster homes throughout the county. I also work at Animal Services, 3120 Martin Way and donations can be dropped off there or I can pick up. Email me and we’ll talke, harotc@live.com.

Diana Holbrook Bless her heart. And her foal. Thanks to HAROTC for trying to do right by the animals put in your care. It is such a valuable service to this community, and means everything for the horses who very much need it. We lost this mare, but at least she knew the compassion of a lot of good people in the end. She died with love, food, medicine, and kind hands looking after her, not alone in the mud. I know the costs don’t end here, and we will continue to do what we can to help pay the bills and care for the ones we have left. I hope everyone will consider even a small donation to enable us to keep doing this work for all who need it now, and will need it in the future. This has been a very expensive impound, and it’s not over.

Hooved Animal Rescue of Thurston County We can’t forget to thank Animal Services and the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, without them serving the warrant and removing the animals the horses would not be in our care.

Please note I have 3 people emailing me all at once about this whole situation, I appreciate the info but I will not print anything I can’t back up with proof or documents, period. The actual owner of these animals is not even as eager as my 2 other emailers.
Yes I realize HAROTC did not disclose that a horse died in their care & that they didn’t happen to mention that even though they mentioned that the other 2 from the last raid did in fact die. I posted on their page, they have not responded, but until they do I am not going to interject as to why. If it is in fact legal liability then I will deal with that when it is time. Or they most certainly will. The rescue operator is a County Employee so they will both face liability in the end. Yes I agree it was tacky to say the least to beg for money for care when the horse had died the day before, but they didn’t ask for money for that specific horse & the horse was not in their care it was in a foster home, & yes they are liable for the pain & suffering this animal went through but realistically: How likely is it that Animal Control Services is going to act against itself? The owner will have to take that up with her Tort Claim.
The horses were not listed on her Warrant inventory, I had her look several weeks ago to verify this fact for me, I have confirmed this. If she gets an attorney with enough on the ball he or she will bring up that issue.
Yes she has chosen to get an attorney instead of trying to represent herself I believe they made it ‘official” sometime this week. I along with many other people advised her this was not prudent, since she is facing felonies.
Yes I agree that it was nothing but showboating by the Olympian & the Rescue operator doing stories every 5 minutes trying to garner sympathy & donations. I don’t see the “blame” the same as you though. The newspaper is 100% liable & responsible for what they print, the rescue did not go in and put a gun to their head to make them put that woman’s full name, age & physical living address, THEY are the one’s who have endangered this woman’s health & safety, they chose to keep writing & KEEP including her personal information, knowing full well that there was a young child on the property & it was the NEWSPAPER that chose to post all that, not the rescue or the shelter.
I will not be able to do a Public Records request any time within the next 6 months I am dealing with my own issues but if you can do it I will look at what you get for me & post that as well. (If you want to prove that they ask for 10K every time they take in animals just look up any case they have been involved in & look for the final judgement & sentence which will tell you, I don’t have the time to run down to Oly & look it up).
